Prep & Mods
04/97

Maintenance prep this month:

Changed oil & filter (Red Line synthetic 10w40, Honda filter)
Cleaned & oiled K&N air filter
Replaced Dunlop 364's with last year's set.
Cleaned and lubed the chain (WD40)

The mods made this month included installation of a used set of Yoshimura rear-sets. I've eyed a lot of rear-sets and the Yosh units look as good as the best I've seen. For the F2, they utilize the stock shifter and brake pedal. The foot pegs are knurled and provide quite a bit more grip than the TBR foot pegs that I've been using since November. The TBR's are a nice piece of work, but as my speed picked up out on T8/T9, I found myself slipping off the peg as the ride become bumpy. The outer edges of the Yosh foot pegs gave too much grip, though, so I had to lift my foot off the peg to find the shifter. A little work with a file took care of that & now they're perfect.

The Yosh rear-sets mounted up fine. I decided not to use the rear brake switch adapter that was included, so I shimmed the top mounting bracket with a washer. This left no-where to mount the brake lever return spring, so I hooked it into a gap in the frame.

After eyeballing the Dunlops after last month's race (no tread left on the right side of the rear), I decided to swap them out with the set I started on last year. There was a fair amount of life on the old set - I had replaced them back in October for Reg Pridmore's CLASS (new tires required). I stored the old set in black trash bags to keep the light and ozone away from the rubber. The old tires ran just fine all weekend. Steve & I are signed up for Keith Code's Superbike school next month, so I'll probably pick up a new set of Dunlop 207s at next months race.
